Speech therapy
Many children in the Netherlands are raised as bilingual. Children have the ability to rapidly grasp multiple languages. They can also quickly learn how to pronounce the different sounds in languages, adjusting their communication easily to their surroundings.
Some children, however, have difficulty with pronouncing words correctly. Therefore, they may not feel understood by their environment, they may have difficulty keeping up in school or they may have difficulty making friends. It is very important to seek the correct support to prevent your child from any further communication problems.
I frequently work with bilingual families to offer advice & support for the whole household (parents included) to establish a strong speech basis for the children.
Speech therapy can be used in a
variety of circumstances.
The following list describes common indicators of challenges in which speech therapy can support:
- Omitting sounds or incorrect pronunciation of sounds
- Not being understood by other people
- Insecurity whilst speaking
- Swish or lisp
- Incorrect speech
- Problems with speech rate or intonation
- Frustration whilst speaking
